Gunnebo works actively to reduce its negative impact on the environment. Below are some examples of what we are doing to help the world around us.
Smarter Use of Transportation and Packaging
The introduction of a new logistics system at Gunnebo's production unit in Doetinchem resulted in:
12% increase in the loads transported ensuring vehicles are filled closer to capacity
75% reduction in waste through recycling and better use of packaging materials
Greater percentage of purchases made locally to reduce emissions
Online Meetings Instead of Travel
The introduction of new technology across the Group means employees can organise and attend meetings from their own computer, removing the need to travel long distances and significantly reducing the Gunnebo's impact on the environment. Currently an average of 1834 online meetings are organised within Gunnebo each month.
In addition, IP telephony has reduced phone costs and the costs involved in the maintenance of traditional phone networks.
Energy Saving Campaigns
Several production units and sales companies have run campaigns to raise awareness about how to reduce the use of electricity and fossil fuels. This has included the increased usage of low energy light bulbs in many parts of the company.
Gunnebo's production units in both Doetinchem and Trier run on 100% renewable energy, eliminating the use of fossil fuels.
Several of Gunnebo's production units have introduced Lean Production, a philosophy on how to identify and eliminate all elements of the production process which do not create value for the end customer. Simply put, this means using less resources in manufacturing.
Clean Shipping Network
Gunnebo is proud to be a part of the Clean Shipping Network, an association of cargo owning corporations which have decided to utilise the Clean Shipping Index in their sea transport procurement.
The index offers environmental ranking for ships and entire carriers based on their performances in different areas. Ships and carriers are evaluated based on emission levels of carbon dioxide (CO2), nitrogen oxides (NOx), sulphur oxides (SOx) and particulate matter (PM).
The index also includes use of chemicals, how carriers take care of their waste on board, and how they treat various water discharges, such as sewage and ballast water.
Lower Emissions from Company Cars
To help reduce Group carbon dioxide emissions, Gunnebo is committed to using company cars which impact less on the environment.
Gunnebo's company cars do not emit more than an average of 140g of carbon dioxide per kilometre and the goal is to bring it below 130g per kilometre.
In some parts of the company, this has already become a reality. In France, Gunnebo has invested in GPS units for their vehicles to ensure the shortest possible routes are taken, resulting in average emissions of only 127g of CO2 per kilometre. This is even lower in Portugal, where the average is 110g per kilometre.
